Grade 10

For Grade 10 art I took my schools ceramics course. I learned how to work with Air Dry Clay, and the sculpting process from thumbnails, to rough sketches, to moulding the sculpture itself. I used different techniques in order to shape, and form my sculptures so that they won’t crack when they dry, and so that they can support their own weights and won’t cave in.

For this piece I took my first version of it and thought about how I could improve it. I decided that it would be better for the wings to be larger and more surrounding to the figure, and that they should rest partially on the ground to take some of the weight off of the cross. I also think that it would be best to use a wood board as support so it doesn’t bend and twist as it dries. Finally I decided to make it bigger overall so that it would make a larger impact.

This piece was inspired by the Bible verse Psalm 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” The tea light in the chest of the figure represents the light unto the path, showing the fire God lights within our hearts. The light in the bottom of the figure represents the light unto thy feet and how God guides us through life.

Dimensions

5.5” x 3.5” x 5.5″

Material(s)

air dry clay

Artist Statement

This piece was inspired by the Bible verse 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weigh of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to things that are seen but to things that are unseen.” The figure holding out their hands with their heart inside looking sad represents our outer selves wasting away, but the angel wings from the cross lifting up the figure represents our inner selves being renewed day by day.

For this piece I was inspired by my love for all things architecture. This piece allowed me to be creative and also learn about how to create a piece that works to functionally support itself and still be aesthetically beautiful, and a piece that flows in unison.
